FIRS Insists Lawyers Must Remit VAT Under New Tax Law

The Federal Inland Revenue Service has reaffirmed that lawyers and law firms must pay the 7.5 percent Value Added Tax on professional services from January 2026. The new tax regime excludes low-income earners, traders, and small businesses with annual turnover below ₦100 million.

FIRS Chairman, Zack Adedeji, stated this at the Nigerian Association of Law Teachers’ annual conference in Abuja. Represented by Bright Igbinosa, he said the reforms are designed to promote fairness, curb evasion, and boost revenue.

Adedeji urged lawyers to register and file returns promptly, warning that non-compliance would attract sanctions. He stressed that professional services are clearly defined as taxable under the new fiscal framework.
