Federal Polytechnic Orogun Wins National Quiz on Tanker Fire Solutions

Federal Polytechnic Orogun in Delta State has claimed first place in a national engineering quiz competition organised by the Nigerian Institute of Safety Engineers, part of the Nigerian Society of Engineers. The contest, held on 20 September 2025 at the MOM Civic Centre in Warri, focused on engineering solutions to tanker explosions and fire outbreaks.

The Orogun Polytechnic team, made up of Siemur Ohwavweoriete from Electrical/Electronic Engineering and Oyibocha Goodluck from Mechanical Engineering, scored 47 out of 50 points, beating teams from the Petroleum Training Institute and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources. Their presentation proposed innovative fire-resistant tanker materials, real-time leakage detection, and emergency response technologies.

The Rector of Federal Polytechnic Orogun, Prof. Duke Okoro, praised the students for their achievement and announced scholarships covering their tuition fees, alongside personal cash awards and the competition’s prize money. He described the students as exemplars of the institution’s commitment to fostering innovation.

The Nigerian Institute of Safety Engineers commended the winning solutions, noting their potential to enhance tanker safety and reduce fire-related incidents in Nigeria.
