Fear in Ughelli as Gunmen Strike in Broad Daylight

A violent daytime attack by unidentified gunmen has unsettled Iwhrekpokpor community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, heightening fears of renewed cult-related violence.

According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers arrived on motorcycles wearing black outfits, targeted a man in the area and fled almost immediately. The incident drew a large crowd and temporarily disrupted movement as residents struggled to understand what had happened. The victim’s identity remained unknown at press time.

Though there has been no official response from the police, residents have linked the attack to simmering rivalries between cult groups operating in Ughelli. Locals recalled past clashes involving Maphite (GCAI) and Vikings (DNKI), noting that tensions reportedly resurfaced months after a peace effort in late 2025.

The latest incident has renewed calls for stronger security presence and intelligence-led operations, with residents warning that sporadic attacks continue to threaten safety despite earlier crackdowns on cult networks in the area.
