Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced a new minimum wage of N75,000 per month for state workers, up from the previous N70,000. The increase was revealed during his May Day speech at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City on Thursday.
Governor Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the state’s workforce for their hard work and commitment to the development of Edo. He described the wage hike as a gesture of appreciation and a step towards improving the standard of living for the state’s civil servants.
“Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of N75,000 per month for Edo workers. This is our way of saying thank you for your continuous dedication and hard work,” the governor said.
The wage increase follows a series of measures aimed at enhancing the welfare of Edo workers. Governor Okpebholo also emphasized his administration’s focus on job stability and improved service delivery, including converting casual workers into permanent positions and recruiting new staff for critical sectors such as education and health.
The announcement has been met with praise from workers’ unions, with the acting Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide, commending the governor for prioritizing workers’ welfare. “Governor Okpebholo has demonstrated a genuine commitment to improving the living standards of Edo workers,” Egwekhide said.
The governor also reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring the timely payment of salaries and pensions, further stressing the importance of worker welfare in the state’s ongoing development.
The increase to N75,000 per month places Edo among the states making substantial efforts to enhance the livelihoods of their workforce amidst the current economic challenges.
