Nearly four years after gunmen attacked worshippers at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, security operatives have arrested another suspect connected to the atrocity. The Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed the capture of Sani Yusuf in Iguosa community, along the Powerline axis of Ovia North Local Government Area, Edo State.
The June 5, 2022 assault claimed the lives of more than 40 people and left many others wounded when attackers stormed the church during Sunday Mass, set off explosives and fired into the congregation. The massacre sent shockwaves across Nigeria and prompted widespread outrage at home and abroad.
Security sources said Yusuf had remained on the agency’s watchlist since the attack and was tracked across several states before his arrest. After initially fleeing to Kano State, he allegedly settled in Edo, blending into the community while evading detection.
Officials believe Yusuf held a senior position within the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and was instrumental in coordinating the Owo operation. His arrest marks the sixth detention linked to the church massacre as authorities continue efforts to bring all those involved to justice.
