Delta LG Chairman Promises Support to Traders After Demolition

The Chairman of Ughelli North Local Government Area in Delta State, Jaro Egbo, has assured traders and business owners affected by the recent demolition of illegal structures at Ughelli Main Market and Otovwodo that they will receive government support.

The demolition, which took place during last Saturday’s environmental sanitation exercise, was aimed at clearing makeshift structures, road extensions, and encroachments on walkways, following a directive from the local government.
Speaking to traders at Ughelli Main Market on Wednesday, Egbo stated that the state government, under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, is committed to ensuring their welfare. He reassured them that no trader would be left to suffer as a result of the demolition.

“Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is deeply concerned about your well-being, and he does not want any of you to face hardship,” Egbo said.

In an effort to support those affected, Egbo urged traders to organize by trade categories and submit their details through group leaders for government intervention. He also revealed that a section of the foodstuff market, previously used as a dump site, has been reclaimed, and plans are underway to construct additional stalls for displaced traders.

Egbo further announced that the ongoing construction of open and lock-up stalls at the GRA is nearing completion, with plans to allocate these stalls to those displaced by the demolition.

In a separate development, Egbo declared that Ughelli Main Market would be closed on Friday, December 6, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, to allow for the burial rites of victims of a recent communal clash between the Ekiugbo and Ihwreko communities.

A landlord at the GRA junction, Mr. Peter Eferhievwe, commended Egbo’s leadership and adding that the demolition as a necessary step towards improving Ughelli North’s image as a progressive council. He urged the affected traders to cooperate with the council and support the Chairman’s vision for the area.
