Delta Govt Moves to End Harassment of Licensed Motorists, Opens Hotline
The Delta State Ministry of Transport has issued a stern warning against the harassment and extortion of motorists and transport operators who have fulfilled all licensing and vehicle documentation requirements.
The Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, made the announcement in a statement released on Friday. He said the Ministry had received several complaints alleging that certain individuals and enforcement personnel were intimidating drivers and demanding illegal payments, even when their documents were up to date.
“The Delta State Government strongly condemns these unlawful activities,” Agofure stated. “No law-abiding road user should be subjected to intimidation or extortion under any guise. Our position is clear: only motorists and transport workers who are fully compliant with licensing and documentation requirements are protected by this directive.”
To ensure accountability, the Ministry has opened a dedicated channel for incident reporting. Road users who meet all compliance standards are encouraged to report cases of harassment by calling or sending a WhatsApp message to +234 815 408 7910.
Agofure emphasized that the platform is strictly for law-abiding citizens.
“Defaulters are cautioned not to use this avenue to evade justice or justify violations,” he said.
“This mechanism is not a shield for offenders but a safeguard for those who have met all obligations under the law.”
He assured the public that all verified complaints will be handled swiftly, with offenders facing disciplinary or legal consequences.
The Commissioner also urged transport unions and associations to sensitize their members about their rights and responsibilities, reinforcing the government’s commitment to fairness on Delta roads.
The Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to building a transparent, safe, and harassment-free transport system that protects responsible road users while ensuring defaulters face the law.
