Delta Civil Service Appointment: Uzum Advocates for Professionalism and Fairness
Lawyer and policy consultant, Eugene Azuka Uzum has urged the Delta State Government to uphold professionalism, equity, and fairness in the appointment of Permanent Secretaries within the state civil service.
In an interview with journalists over the weekend, Uzum emphasized the need for these principles amidst ongoing modernization efforts within Nigeria’s civil service.
“With the continual updates to the civil service rules, it is crucial that the foundational values sustaining the service are preserved.” He noted.
Uzum also stressed that career progression, seniority, equity, and fairness in the selection of Permanent Secretaries, who serve as chief accounting officers in various ministries and extra-ministerial departments should be given priority.
He added that appointments should be based on merit and seniority to uphold the integrity of the service and ensure balanced representation across local government areas. Uzum expressed concern about the potential influence of political considerations on these appointments, warning that such practices could undermine the merit-based system and disrupt fair distribution of Permanent Secretary positions.
Speaking further, the lawyer and policy consultant called for the protection of the Permanent Secretary role from corruption and political interference, stressing that efforts should be made to maintain the position’s integrity and ensure a positive work environment in the civil service.
