Court Halts Police from Arresting Eight Over Alleged Harassment in Delta
A restraining order has been issued by the Ogwashi-Uku High Court, preventing the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and six others from arresting businessman Benson Okafor and seven other individuals.
The court’s decision came after the applicants, represented by Barrister Benjamin Okoh, filed a motion citing alleged harassment, intimidation, and unlawful arrest. The court emphasized that the order would remain effective until it resolves the matter on its merits.
Justice Flora Azinge, who is overseeing the case, directed that the relevant parties, including the IGP and the AIG of Zone 5, be served with court documents via the Delta State Commissioner of Police. Although interim injunctions typically require a response from the defendants, the court allowed substituted service in this instance to expedite proceedings.
The applicants are seeking the protection of their constitutional rights, as guaranteed under Nigerian law. The case, which has been adjourned to February 2, 2026, will continue as the court examines the substantive motion on the matter.
