Cheers as Vehicles Finally Cross Orere Bridge, Ending Years of River Crossing Challenges

Reuben Izeze

For the first time in decades, residents of Orere and neighbouring communities in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State are witnessing a major change in their daily lives as vehicles have begun crossing the long-awaited Orere Bridge.

The development is being celebrated across the riverine community, where residents have relied largely on canoes and boats for transportation over the years.

The bridge project, which spans about 500 metres across the Orere River, also includes 4.36 kilometres of access roads and a connecting spur into Orere Town. Awarded in 2021, the project has now reached over 82 per cent completion.

For many residents, the significance of the bridge goes beyond infrastructure. Community members say it represents easier movement of people and goods, improved access to markets, schools and healthcare facilities, and new opportunities for economic growth in the area.

During a recent inspection of the project, Delta State Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Reuben Izeze, expressed satisfaction with the progress made and noted that work was advancing steadily despite earlier setbacks caused by adverse weather conditions.

The contractor handling the project, Obakpor J.U. Construction Limited, assured residents that the remaining work would be completed and the bridge fully ready for commissioning before the end of 2026.

Across Orere and surrounding communities, the sight of vehicles moving across the bridge has already sparked excitement, with many residents describing it as a historic milestone that will improve connectivity and reduce the hardship associated with travelling in the area.
