Activist Alleges ‘Approved’ Examination Malpractice in Delta State

Israel Joe, a human rights activist, has expressed concern about an alleged widespread and systemic examination malpractice in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), urging state officials to take immediate action.

In a widely circulated video on social media on Thursday, May 22, Israel Joe revealed that some students in Delta State pay up to ₦40,000 to join organised cheating schemes, with answers shared via mobile phones and WhatsApp.

Joe claims students who cannot afford to pay for such services are segregated and left to fend for themselves under stricter conditions.

“Those who paid are placed together in one hall, provided answers, and allowed to copy freely,” said Joe. “But those who didn’t pay are isolated, given no support, and effectively punished for their parents’ inability to afford the fees.”

The activist directly criticised the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education in Delta State, Mrs Rose Ezewu, urging her to make unannounced visits to WAEC centres to witness the malpractice firsthand.

He suggested that only external scrutiny could address what he described as a broken system that undermines educational integrity.

“This is not just malpractice; this is a system that rewards corruption and punishes diligence,” Joe said. “Our children are being taught that hard work doesn’t matter, only money does.”

There has been no official response yet from the Delta State Ministry of Education regarding these allegations.
