Team Delta Targets Title Comeback at 2026 Niger Delta Games
Team Delta has set its sights on reclaiming the Niger Delta Games title as preparations intensify for the 2026 edition in Benin City, Edo State. Still smarting from a narrow loss at the inaugural Games in Uyo, Delta officials say lessons from last year are shaping a renewed push for glory.
At the maiden edition, Delta topped the overall medals table early but was edged out on the final day by Bayelsa State, which finished with 42 gold medals against Delta’s 41. Bayelsa’s late surge denied Delta a title many believed was already secured, while Edo State placed third.
With the second edition scheduled for February 20 to 27, 2026, Team Delta says it is approaching the competition with confidence rather than pressure. Executive Assistant on Sports to the Delta State Governor, Festus Ohwojero, confirmed that athletes and coaches are focused on tightening gaps exposed in Uyo.
The Benin City Games will feature over 3,000 under-20 athletes from the nine Niger Delta states competing in 17 sports, raising expectations of a more competitive and talent-rich championship.
