Suspension Fears Rise as AFCON Semi-Finals Kick Off
As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations enters its semi-final stage on Wednesday, January 14, attention is shifting beyond tactics to discipline, with 20 players facing suspension risks ahead of the decisive matches. The semi-final fixtures will see Egypt take on Senegal, while Nigeria battle Morocco for a place in the final.
Senegal tops the list of teams with players under caution, with seven members of the squad one booking away from missing the final. Among them are key figures such as Kalidou Koulibaly, Nicolas Jackson, Pape Gueye, and Habib Diallo. Egypt, on their part, have six players walking the disciplinary tightrope, including goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy and defender Rami Rabia.
In the second semi-final, both Nigeria and Morocco face similar concerns. The Super Eagles have four players at risk of suspension, including Stanley Nwabali, Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Frank Onyeka, while Morocco will be watching three players closely.
With the tournament’s title match within reach, any yellow card issued during Wednesday’s encounters could sideline key players for the final, heightening the stakes and tension surrounding the already high-pressure clashes.
