FG Orders Security Boost at Dormant Oil Wells in Ogoniland
The Federal Government has ordered increased security at all dormant oil wells in Ogoniland, Rivers State, following a massive oil spill at the Yorla Oil Field in Kpean community.
The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, disclosed this during a visit to the affected area, saying investigations pointed to sabotage rather than equipment failure, contrary to claims by some civil society groups.
Ribadu said the spill, which occurred at an inactive well, caused extensive damage to farmlands and vegetation, adding that recovery efforts were underway and the spill had been stopped.
He assured residents that those responsible would be identified and prosecuted, while security agencies had been deployed to protect inactive oil facilities and prevent future incidents.
