Delta Police Warn Residents About WhatsApp Hacks

The Delta State Police Command has alerted residents to a rise in WhatsApp account hacks, where scammers take over profiles to request money from friends and family. The attacks have already caused financial losses for several users.

Police spokesperson SP Bright Edafe said scammers often gain access through verification codes obtained via deception or social engineering. Once in control, they quickly send urgent messages to contacts, hoping to extract funds before the victim notices.

Edafe advised residents to enable WhatsApp’s two-step verification, avoid sharing codes, review linked devices regularly, and verify any unexpected requests by phone.

The advisory comes amid increasing reports across Nigeria of digital impersonation scams, with victims frequently losing thousands of naira before discovering the fraud. The command urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities immediately.
