FEC Approves Port Harcourt Airport Concession

Nigeria’s push for modernised aviation operations gained new momentum on Thursday as the Federal Executive Council approved major reforms, including the concession of the Port Harcourt International Airport to private investors. Officials say the move is aimed at reducing the financial strain on government-run airports and elevating service standards nationwide.

Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo noted that interest in the Port Harcourt facility surged under the current administration, with more than six firms bidding to run the airport. He assured aviation unions that workers’ jobs remain protected and pledged continuous engagement to address concerns around the concession process.

Beyond the Port Harcourt approval, FEC endorsed several upgrades across the sector maintenance services for airport management systems, deployment of new tertiary power systems, and installation of modern navigational aids. The Council also authorised the purchase of 15 rescue and firefighting vehicles, alongside the construction of a permanent headquarters for the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.

FEC further ruled that all FAAN-owned residential properties within and around airport environments be retained by government to protect operational safety. The meeting also approved biometric verification at airports using passengers’ NINs to strengthen identity checks and curb fraudulent travel.
