Atiku Signals Readiness to Withdraw From 2027 Race, Gives Condition
Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he is willing to step aside from the 2027 presidential election if a younger and widely accepted candidate emerges under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, Atiku said his political ambition is driven by a desire to offer Nigerians a credible alternative not personal interest. He emphasised that his priority is national recovery and effective leadership, regardless of who leads that mission.
He called on young Nigerians to become more politically active and confirmed that he would support a younger candidate if one is selected through a broad and credible consensus. According to him, age should not be a barrier to leadership when competence is present.
Atiku also rejected claims of desperation, saying he is not fixated on returning to power. Instead, he said his focus remains on challenging what he referred to as years of misrule and helping to chart a new direction for the country.
