PENGASSAN Suspends Strike But Rejects Dangote Deal
The standoff between oil workers and Dangote Refinery may be on hold, but union leaders say the fight is far from over. PENGASSAN announced the suspension of its nationwide strike but made clear that the agreement used to end the action was not a binding deal.
Festus Osifo, President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, told Channels Television that the union did not sign the communiqué brokered by the Ministry of Labour. He maintained that several key demands, including the reinstatement of over 800 workers, remain unresolved.
The union accused Dangote Refinery of unjustly terminating Nigerian workers and replacing them with foreign nationals. Although government intervention helped ease tensions, PENGASSAN warned that it would resume industrial action without notice if the company backslides.
A court injunction has temporarily barred further strikes, but the union says its tools remain ready.
