NDDC Pushes Clean Energy With ‘Light Up Project’ Across Nine States
The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) is making waves with its solar-powered “Light Up Niger Delta” initiative, a project already changing lives across the region. The programme, regarded as one of the Commission’s flagship legacies, is providing clean energy, strengthening local economies, and reducing insecurity in communities long left in darkness.
In Rivers State, areas such as Bodo, Biera, and Bera are reporting significant drops in nighttime crime since the installations began. Local vigilantes confirm that criminal elements now avoid zones previously unsafe after dusk.
The economic impact is also evident. Traders in Yenagoa and Port Harcourt say extended business hours have boosted earnings by nearly 40 percent, with market women and shop owners seizing the opportunity to serve customers late into the night.
Beyond commerce and safety, the project is cutting carbon emissions by replacing fossil fuel dependency with solar power. NDDC maintains that the initiative supports Nigeria’s climate goals and global sustainability targets while giving rural dwellers, such as those in Bayelsa and Abia villages, a taste of modern development once thought impossible.
