Diphtheria Outbreak Kills Two in Edo State
Health authorities in Edo State have confirmed an outbreak of diphtheria, with two people reported dead.
The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, made the announcement on Tuesday, June 3, during an emergency meeting in Benin city.
According to officials, five cases have been confirmed by the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), two of which proved fatal.

The meeting, convened in response to the outbreak, brought together representatives from the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, local health agencies and other key partners.
Dr Oshiomhole described the situation as “a serious cause for concern”, warning that the bacterial infection, which affects the nose and throat, can lead to severe complications or death if left untreated. He said the growing number of cases, along with wider threats such as antimicrobial resistance and viral co-infections, required an urgent and coordinated response.
Plans outlined by the state include the deployment of a rapid response team, enhanced contact tracing, improved disease surveillance, and efforts to increase public awareness.
Health officials also emphasised the importance of vaccination and community engagement in curbing the spread of the disease.
Dr Oshiomhole praised UBTH for its swift response and acknowledged continued support from health partners.
