Warri-South LG Bans Protests After Ijaw Attack on Itsekiri Protesters

The Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Comrade Agbateyiniro Weyinmi Isaac, has announced an indefinite suspension of all rallies and protests within the LGA.

The announcement came shortly after a high-level security meeting held at the Warri South Council Secretariat, attended by senior law enforcement officers including CSP Olubayo Aja of the Police ‘A’ Division, CSP Chris Odeh of Police ‘B’ Division, and other key security stakeholders in a bid to restore order and prevent unrest in area.

This sweeping restriction follows a violent incident earlier in the day at the NPA Miller Waterside, where Ijaw youths reportedly attacked peaceful Itsekiri demonstrators protesting the controversial ward delineation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The Itsekiris have alleged that the exercise was deliberately structured to undermine their representation and shift territorial control to neighboring Ijaw communities.

Speaking after the meeting, Comrade Agbateyiniro, who also serves as the Chief Security Officer of the LGA, stated that the ban was a necessary step to safeguard lives and property in the wake of the ethnic violence.

“Effective immediately, all forms of street protests, rallies, or public demonstrations are prohibited in Warri South until further notice,” he declared. “Anyone or group intending to hold a protest must first obtain formal approval.”

He emphasized that the decision was taken in the interest of public safety and warned that security agencies have been directed to strictly enforce the order.

While assuring residents of continued efforts to maintain peace and protect lawful businesses, the chairman reiterated the administration’s commitment to a peaceful and stable environment conducive to economic growth.
