Tinubu Meets Security Chiefs Over Rising Attacks in Plateau, Benue

President Bola Tinubu is meeting behind closed doors with National Security Adviser (NSA) Nuhu Ribadu and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Christopher Musa as Nigeria faces a sharp escalation in violent attacks across parts of the country.

The meeting, taking place at the President’s official residence in the State House, Abuja, follows his return from a 19-day trip to Europe. While no official details have been released, the discussion is expected to focus on the worsening security situation, particularly in Plateau and Benue states.

Recent weeks have seen a wave of deadly assaults, reportedly carried out by armed groups believed to be foreign herders. These attacks have left hundreds dead and forced entire communities to flee, with survivors claiming the attackers do not speak any Nigerian language.

Between late March and mid-April, more than 100 people were killed in Plateau State alone, with the highest casualties recorded in Bokkos and Bassa local government areas. In Zike Kimakpa community, 52 people were reportedly killed, with another 54 deaths recorded in a nearby village. In Benue State, at least 44 people were killed in attacks across several areas, including Otobi Akpa, Ikobi, and Mbasombo.

Just days ago, Governor Hyacinth Alia reported 20 deaths in coordinated attacks in Logo and Ukum LGAs, further deepening fears of organized violence in the region.

It remains unclear whether other security or intelligence officials are part of the meeting. However, government sources suggest the President is seeking immediate updates and new strategies to halt the violence and reassure communities gripped by fear.
