Oborevwori Signs Electricity Bill, Six Other Laws into Effect

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has signed seven major bills into law, including the highly anticipated Delta State Electricity Power Sector Bill, 2024, which he hailed as a key step in driving the state’s industrialisation efforts.

The Governor, speaking at the signing ceremony on Thursday, described the new legislation as a “game changer” for the state’s economic future. The bills, which also include the Delta State Physical and Regional Planning Bill, the Delta State Film and Video Censor’s Board Bill, and several others, are seen as vital components of the state’s broader push for development and investment.

The other bills assented to include the Registration and Regulation of Private Veterinary Clinics (Amendment) Law, the Child Rights (Amendment) Bill, the Delta State Pet Control and Responsible Ownership Bill, and the Delta State College of Health Technology, Ovrode Bill. Governor Oborevwori noted that these laws were designed to address pressing challenges and improve the quality of life for residents.

The Delta State Electricity Power Sector Law 2024, in particular, will unlock immense opportunities in power generation, transmission, and distribution. This law establishes the legal framework for investors to enter the sector, making Delta State a prime destination for power-related investments.

The Governor also stressed the importance of the Child Rights Amendment Law, which strengthens protections for children in the state. He explained that the new law would prevent the employment of children for domestic work outside of family environments and would establish an Adoption Service Department to support prospective adoptive parents.

Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, also expressed support for the Governor’s initiatives, congratulating him on the ongoing infrastructure projects across the state. He noted that these projects were delivering tangible value for the people of Delta.

“The people of Delta are seeing the results of their investment in infrastructure, and the state’s development is moving forward,” said Guwor. He added that public consultations, including hearings where residents could submit memoranda, were held before the bills were passed.

Governor Oborevwori urged all stakeholders to work together to ensure the successful implementation of the new laws, stressing that the focus now should be on delivering the intended benefits to the people of Delta State.
