Wike Says No Crisis if Rivers Assembly Impeaches Fubara
The immediate-past Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has stated that there would be no crisis if the Martins Amaewhule-led House of Assembly proceeds with impeaching his successor, Siminalayi Fubara.
Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike, who is now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), said there was nothing wrong with the Assembly deciding to remove Fubara over alleged impeachable offenses, including the non-payment of lawmakers’ salaries for several months.
Wike argued that the impeachment was not a criminal act but a constitutional process. “If you have committed an offense to be impeached, what’s wrong? Is it a criminal offense? It’s provided in the constitution. Am I a member of the Assembly?” he asked.
The former governor dismissed concerns over potential unrest should Fubara be impeached. He said, “I have heard people say: ‘Oh, if they impeach him, there will be a breakdown of law and order’. Rubbish! Nothing will happen.”
Wike also weighed in on the post-Supreme Court verdict situation, criticizing Fubara’s approach. He stated that if the Amaewhule-led Assembly was not interested in peace, it could have taken drastic actions, such as a six-month recess after the Supreme Court ruling.
On February 28, 2025, the Supreme Court ruled on the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State. In its judgment, the five-man panel led by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye dismissed Fubara’s appeal challenging the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led Assembly. The court ordered the Assembly to resume sitting immediately, with Amaewhule retaining his position as Speaker.
