Tuggar: Nigeria Has No Plans to Cut Ties with France

Nigeria’s Foreign Minister, Yusuf Tuggar, has reassured the public of the country’s continued commitment to its longstanding diplomatic relationship with France, following speculation that the shifting dynamics within West Africa could threaten the alliance.

In a television interview, Tuggar emphatically dismissed rumours suggesting a breakdown in relations between the two nations, insisting that Nigeria has no intention of severing ties with France or any other key international partners.

“Nigeria has no intention of cutting ties with France or any of our longstanding international partners,” Tuggar said. “Our foreign policy objectives are enshrined in the Constitution, focusing on peace, cooperation, and mutual benefit.”

Tuggar stressed that the partnership between Nigeria and France remains vital, particularly in areas such as security, trade, and cultural exchanges. He pointed to their collaborative efforts in counter-terrorism and regional stability as evidence of the strength and importance of the bilateral relationship.

“France has been a key partner in fostering regional stability and economic growth. Our collaboration in counter-terrorism efforts and other critical areas speaks to the strength of this partnership,” he added.

The recent shifts within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the evolving geopolitical landscape have prompted speculation that Nigeria’s foreign policy may be diverging from that of its historical allies, including France. However, Tuggar firmly rejected these concerns, describing them as “unfounded.”

The foreign minister also reiterated Nigeria’s ongoing diplomatic efforts, particularly its push for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council. He confirmed that Nigeria would continue to work with international partners, including France, in pursuit of stronger African representation in global decision-making.

“Nigeria remains steadfast in advocating for Africa’s representation on the Security Council, and we will continue to work closely with partners like France to achieve this objective,” Tuggar stated.

Tuggar concluded by emphasizing Nigeria’s approach to foreign policy as one of constructive diplomacy, focused on dialogue and cooperation rather than confrontation.
