Warri-Itakpe Train Derails, Service Resumes Today

Passengers aboard a train traveling on the Warri-Itakpe route narrowly avoided tragedy on Sunday night when the train derailed at Okpara, in the Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State. The incident, which occurred around 10:00 PM, left passengers stranded overnight, with many unable to continue their journey until Monday morning.

Eyewitnesses revealed that some passengers were victims of theft during the night, with several reporting stolen phones and valuables while they slept. One source shared, “The incident happened at Okpara Station last night. They stole many people’s phones and other valuables when they slept. It’s only this morning that everyone began finding their way to their various destinations.”

In response to the incident, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) issued a statement on Monday, confirming the derailment and offering assurances regarding the restoration of services. The NRC’s spokesperson, Yakub Mahmood, stated that a team of engineers had been dispatched to the scene to repair the track and resume services as quickly as possible.

“The service will resume shortly,” Mahmood stated in the statement. “A team of engineers is on-site to restore the track. We expect the Warri-Itakpe route to be fully operational later this afternoon.”

The NRC also confirmed that the Itakpe-Warri (Ujewu) train service would resume as scheduled on Monday afternoon. In the statement, the NRC expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by the derailment and assured the public that all efforts were being made to prevent further disruptions.
