Insecurity Prevents Ships From Berthing In Niger Delta -NSC
The Nigerian Shippers’ Council (NSC) has revealed safety concerns and insecurity along the waterways are major obstacles preventing ships from berthing in the Niger Delta region.
Executive Secretary Pius Ukeyima, represented by Glory Onojedo, the NSC’s Director of Consumer Affairs, made the statement at the 2024 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) event in Port Harcourt.
The NSC has called for increased security patrols on the nation’s waterways, especially in the Niger Delta, as part of efforts to improve the situation and ensure the safety of vessels. Ukeyima noted that increased security measures would encourage shipping companies to return to the region for business.
The NSC Executive Secretary also acknowledged the significant decrease in piracy incidents in the area and stressed the need for stakeholders to take proactive steps to further enhance safety and restore confidence in maritime operations.
