18 Suspects to Stand Trial for Sexual Assault at Ozoro Festival
Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested 18 suspects following public outrage over viral videos showing women being sexually harassed and stripped during the Alue-Do festival in Uruamudhu Community, Ozoro, in Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.
The incident occurred during the Alue-Do fertility festival held on March 19, 2026. The annual cultural celebration, traditionally organised to bless women for childbearing, took a disturbing turn when groups of young men allegedly chased women, tore their clothes and groped them in public, according to videos widely circulated on social media.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said four women reported the incident to the police, while clarifying that none alleged rape. He stated that the suspects currently in custody will face charges for sexual assault.
Meanwhile, Gender Strategy Advancement International condemned the development, warning that the events highlight the persistent lack of safety for women in public spaces. Executive Director of the organisation, Dr Adaora Sydney-Jack, said cultural practices should promote dignity rather than humiliation, stressing that communities and institutions must take responsibility to ensure the protection and respect of women at all times.
