ASUU Gives FG Four-Day Ultimatum on New Salary Structure
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has given the Federal Government a four-day ultimatum to begin implementing a newly approved salary structure for university lecturers. ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, announced the deadline on Thursday during a public lecture at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, in Bauchi. He stated that the union expects the government to commence payment under the agreed structure within the given timeframe, warning that failure to comply would result in a decisive response.
Piwuna explained that the demand is part of broader efforts to enhance lecturers’ welfare and tackle persistent issues related to poor remuneration. He noted that inadequate compensation has continued to fuel brain drain and contribute to the declining standard of higher education in Nigeria. The union’s latest move follows prolonged negotiations between both parties over the salary structure, which the government had previously approved.
The ASUU president further expressed concern that past agreements with the government have often faced inconsistent implementation, leading to recurring disputes and industrial actions. He emphasized that the union’s ultimatum reflects a continued push for accountability and the fulfilment of commitments aimed at improving conditions within the university system.
