Warri to Launch Community Campaign as Cult Violence Rises

Warri will host a new community-led initiative on Saturday, November 8, aimed at addressing drug abuse, cultism and gender-based violence. The campaign will be launched at the Police ‘A’ Division. The programme is being championed by civil society groups, security agencies and community influencers seeking a united front against the surge in youth-related insecurity.

Warri has witnessed a troubling rise in cult-linked violence in recent weeks, especially around the Odion and Iyara axis, where at least two people were confirmed dead in clashes between rival groups. Similar confrontations have been recorded in other parts of Delta State this year, prompting heightened police patrols, targeted raids and engagements with local vigilante networks aimed at disrupting cult cells and recovering weapons.

The Delta State Government says it is adopting a dual approach that pairs stricter enforcement with expanded community engagement to tackle the drivers of crime. Police have increased operations in known hotspots across the state, while officials are partnering with youth groups and traditional institutions to deter cult recruitment and strengthen rehabilitation programmes for vulnerable young people.

Organisers of the upcoming one-day event argue that no family or community is insulated from the consequences of drugs, violence or cult activity. Their goal is to forge a community-led framework where residents, security agencies, schools, faith leaders and youth groups work collectively to prevent crime rather than merely react to its aftermath.
