Warri-Itakpe Train Tragedy: FG Promises Safety Reforms, Investigation Begins

The Federal Government has pledged to strengthen railway safety measures following the tragic derailment of a Warri-Itakpe train near Agbor in Delta State, an incident that claimed four lives and left dozens of passengers injured.

A federal delegation led by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Funsho Adebiyi, visited the accident scene and assured Nigerians that steps would be taken to prevent a recurrence of the disaster. The visit came a day after several coaches of the train overturned along the busy rail corridor, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.

Preliminary findings released by authorities indicate that four coaches capsized while another derailed. Officials confirmed that four passengers—including an infant—lost their lives, while at least 24 others sustained serious injuries. The train was carrying a total of 482 people, including passengers, crew members, security personnel, and service providers.

Emergency responders, supported by the Delta State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Police, and other agencies, swiftly evacuated injured passengers to hospitals in Agbor and surrounding communities for treatment. Rescue operations were completed hours after the accident, while efforts continued to account for all passengers and recover personal belongings from the wreckage.

Investigators have since commenced a full probe to determine the cause of the derailment. Railway officials were also seen clearing wreckage from the tracks as work continued to restore normal operations along the route.

The accident has reignited concerns about rail safety in Nigeria, with many passengers and transport stakeholders calling for improved maintenance, stronger safety protocols, and greater investment in railway infrastructure to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has now suspended operations on the Warri–Itakpe train service following the fatal derailment near Agbor, Delta State, on June 6, 2026 till further notice.
