WAEC Debunks Viral Claims of Subject Restriction for 2026 Exams
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has refuted claims circulating online that it directed schools to restrict students to specific subjects for the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). The examination body clarified that no such instruction was issued and urged schools and the public to disregard the misleading reports.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, on behalf of the Head of National Office, the Council stated that the alleged directive was a fabrication with no official basis. WAEC emphasised that it does not determine or modify school curricula, noting that such authority lies solely with the Federal Government through its education agencies.
According to the Council, its responsibility is limited to implementing approved curricula through fair and credible examinations, in line with national education standards. It added that any changes to school subjects or syllabuses would only occur through formal government channels and due process.
WAEC, which operates in five West African countries, reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and excellence in student assessment. It urged stakeholders to rely exclusively on verified information from the Council’s official platforms to avoid being misled by false reports ahead of the 2026 WASSCE.
