Trump Moves to Withdraw U.S. From 66 Global Organizations

President Donald Trump has launched a sweeping withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNESCO, and several regional trade and security alliances. The White House confirmed the announcement on Monday.

In an Oval Office memorandum, Trump criticized the bodies as “burdensome, ineffective, and contrary to the interests of the American taxpayer.” He argued that billions spent annually on international dues would be better invested in domestic infrastructure and border security. Trump also claimed that some global organizations operate against U.S. values and economic interests.

The decision has caused unease among global leaders. European Union and United Nations officials warned that the U.S. exit could weaken efforts in pandemic preparedness, climate monitoring, and development programs. Legal experts noted that while the president can withdraw from many executive agreements, leaving treaty-based organizations may require Senate approval or face judicial challenges.

The White House emphasized a shift toward “strategic bilateral partnerships” over multilateral institutions. Congress is expected to see vigorous debate, with Republicans highlighting cost savings and Democrats warning of a potential loss of global influence.
