Tinubu: People Benefiting From Old System “Wish Me Dead”

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that individuals negatively affected by his administration’s economic reforms are wishing him dead over the removal of fuel subsidy and the unification of exchange rates.

The President made the statement through former Olusegun Osoba, who represented him at the launch of “The NADECO Story”, a book written by Ayo Opadokun, alongside an award ceremony recognising pro-democracy figures.

According to Osoba, Tinubu said those who previously benefitted from fuel subsidy payments and multiple exchange rate regimes are unhappy with the reforms and are making efforts to destabilise the country.

He quoted the President as saying people involved in “round-tripping” would “wish him dead at any time,” while stressing that Tinubu remains committed to restructuring the economy despite mounting pressure.

Speaking on the economy, the President said the disparity between the official and parallel market exchange rates has reduced considerably, with the naira stabilising at about ₦1,380 to the dollar.

He added that he would not introduce policies capable of causing a sudden appreciation of the currency that could distort existing market realities.

Tinubu also identified the economy and security as the immediate priorities of his administration, warning that insecurity is gradually extending into the South-West region.
