Tinubu Mocks Opposition, Dismisses One-Party Fears

President Bola Tinubu has openly criticised opposition parties, saying it was a “pleasure” to witness internal divisions tearing them apart. His comments come amid a wave of defections from the opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), prompting fresh debate over the future of Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

Speaking during a joint National Assembly session on Democracy Day, President Tinubu welcomed several new defectors to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State.

Amid concerns over growing defections and fears of a one-party state, the president dismissed the claims and insisted that Nigeria’s democracy remains intact.

“A one-party state is not in the offing,” he said. “But we would be guilty of political malpractice if we closed the door on those who seek to join us.”

He advised opposition parties to focus on fixing their internal problems rather than accusing the APC of political sabotage.

“Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist,” President Tinubu added.

“Try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you do so. It is indeed a pleasure to watch you in such disarray.”

While critical of the opposition, President Tinubu, however, stressed the importance of maintaining political diversity in Nigeria. He called for constructive competition among parties and urged cooperation across political lines, particularly in addressing the country’s economic and social challenges.
