Tinubu Hosts Alaafin, Seeks Stronger Ties with Traditional Rulers

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated the importance of traditional institutions in Nigeria’s development, urging closer cooperation in implementing policies that impact citizens’ lives.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday during a visit by the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Abdulhakeem Owoade I, and a delegation of traditional rulers from Oyo State, President Tinubu congratulated the monarch on his ascension, stating that it is historic and divinely ordained.

The President commended the Oyo traditional council for ensuring a smooth succession following the passing of Oba Lamidi Adeyemi on 22 April 2022, and acknowledged Oba Owoade’s dedication to preserving cultural heritage and promoting development.

He reaffirmed his administration’s focus on education, healthcare, and inclusive governance, and noted the contributions of Oyo indigenes serving in his office, including Ambassador Victor Adeleke, State Chief of Protocol, and Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, Aide-de-Camp and king-designate of Ilemonaland in Kwara State.

In his speech, Oba Owoade assured the President of the traditional council’s support while hailing the administration’s work in economic reform, infrastructure, social welfare, youth empowerment, and agriculture.

The monarch called for continued cooperation between traditional and modern institutions to achieve national progress.
