Suspected Herders Kill Farmers in Delta

Suspected herders have murdered two farmers in the Umunede and Mbiri communities in Ika North-East of Delta state.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday in Mbiri, has sparked violent reprisals in the region.

According to local sources, the fatal shooting of two farmers took place along the farm road in Idumu-Ikeze Quarters and the Mbiri farm settlement road. In the aftermath, a group of angry youths reportedly stormed a settlement in the nearby Umunede community, inhabited by members of the Hausa ethnic group, setting fire to properties, including motorcycles.

Warri Sentinel gathered one of the victims was on his way to inspect his cassava plantation when he encountered the suspected herders, who have been terrorising the area for some time.

The police confirmed the killings, but said the identity of the attackers remains unclear.

The killings and subsequent unrest have raised concerns about growing tensions between local farmers and herders in the community, a situation that has sparked fears of further violence.
