Soldiers Clash with Residents in Okpare-Olomu
A serious crisis has erupted in Okpare-Olomu, a town in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, after soldiers forcefully occupied the community’s town hall on Thursday morning.
At around 7 am, three military pickup vans entered the town, and the soldiers made their way directly to the community town hall. Reports suggest that the military personnel were searching for community leaders, including the President-General of Okpare-Olomu, Mr. Okiemute Otoka, ahead of an annual conference scheduled for the day.
The intervention has triggered widespread protests across Okpare-Olomu, with local women and youth voicing their anger in the streets. Many community members are questioning the military’s presence, fearing it is an attempt to disrupt the presentation of the town’s annual report, a crucial event for the community’s development.
Mr. Otoka, in a statement to reporters, confirmed the military’s actions and alleged that certain elders within the community were behind the invasion. He accused these individuals of selling community land without proper approval and said they had called in the military to prevent opposition to their actions.
As of the latest updates, the soldiers remain inside the town hall, with their vehicles barricading the premises. The standoff has left residents fearful and uncertain, as businesses and daily life come to a standstill.
Further details are awaited as the situation continues to unfold.
