Senator Addresses Tensions Following Detention of Comedian Over NDDC Project

The Senator Representing Delta South Senatorial District, Senator Joel Onowakpo has finally spoken out to address rising tensions in Isoko land, following the arrest of MC Ajirioghene Otagba, popularly known as MC2Kingdom. The Comedian was detained on Friday, February 14, 2025 after raising concerns about the long-abandoned 132/33KVA substation project in Ozoro, which was awarded to Chief Matthew Edevbie’s company by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in the early 2000s.

In a statement addressing his constituents, Senator Onowakpo expressed solidarity with the people of Isoko, acknowledging their frustration over the neglected substation that has left many in darkness. He emphasised the community’s longstanding contributions to Nigeria’s oil industry, noting that despite the Isoko region being one of the country’s largest onshore crude oil producers, its people continue to face significant hardships.

“Like you, I share your pain and frustration,” Senator Onowakpo said. “I will always stand by you in your quest for justice.”

The Senator reiterated his belief that individuals have the right to speak out against injustice and highlighted Otagba’s case as an example of this fundamental right. In an effort to ease tensions, the Senator revealed that he had been in discussions with Chief Edevbie, who has agreed to take steps to facilitate Otagba’s release.

The Senator sued for calm and called on local leaders to take immediate action to prevent further unrest and a breakdown of law and order. He also mentioned ongoing behind-the-scenes efforts to restart the substation project, which have involved consultations with various stakeholders, including the NDDC and the Isoko Development Union.

“As your Senator, I remain committed to finding lasting solutions to the challenges facing our community,”.

“I will continue to work with all relevant parties to ensure that Isoko receives the development it deserves,” Onowakpo assured.
