Rivers Police Arrest Woman Over ATM Fraud Worth ₦500,000
A 35-year-old woman, Blessing Oleru, has been arrested in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in connection with an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) debit card swap fraud worth over ₦500,000.
The Rivers State Police Command said Oleru’s arrest followed a report from a victim, who alleged that his ATM card was swapped after he attempted to make a withdrawal at a bank along the Garrison axis in Port Harcourt on 26 November 2024. The victim told police that the ATM malfunctioned, prompting Oleru, who was nearby, to offer assistance. However, instead of helping, Oleru reportedly swapped the victim’s debit card.
The victim later noticed multiple unauthorised transactions, amounting to ₦523,600, after leaving the ATM.
Following a coordinated investigation, police operatives arrested Oleru on 25 February 2025. During questioning, Oleru admitted to the crime, and a Moniepoint Point of Sale (PoS) machine was recovered from her.
Police say they are continuing their investigation and are working to identify and apprehend other members of the alleged fraud syndicate.
Meanwhile, the police have urged members of the public to remain cautious when using ATMs and report any suspicious activities to the police immediately.
