Rivers Electoral Commission Receives Updated Voters Register Ahead of Council Elections

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has confirmed that it has received the updated voters register for the state from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in preparation for the upcoming local government elections scheduled for 9 August 2025.

RSIEC’s Commissioner for Media and Civic Education, Tamunótonye Tobins, made the announcement in a statement on Thursday evening. The updated voters register, along with the list of registered political parties in Nigeria, was handed over to the commission on 13 March 2025, Warri Sentinel learnt.

The development follows the Supreme Court’s annulment of the 2024 local government elections in Rivers State, citing the failure of INEC to provide the updated voter register to RSIEC in time.

In his statement, Tobins reassured stakeholders and citizens of Rivers State that the RSIEC is committed to conducting a free, fair, and credible election. He added that the commission was now fully prepared to proceed with the local government elections on the set date.

Tobins further reaffirmed RSIEC’s commitment to delivering transparent elections, with the full support of the updated voter register and relevant documents now in place.
