Raye Still Serving, No Service Extension – NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has dismissed claims by activist Omoyele Sowore that it extended the service year of corps member Rita Uguamaye as punishment for criticising President Bola Tinubu.

Sowore alleged that Uguamaye, who recently went viral for criticising the government and Nigeria’s economic hardship, had her service extended by two months in what he seemed a political reprisal. He warned that he would lead protests at the NYSC Passing Out Parade if she was not allowed to complete her service without interference.

“This Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu regime might go down with Rita Raye’s National Youth Service Corps matter,” Sowore wrote. “This is not acceptable; we will mobilise down to the Passing Out Parade except Rita is allowed to complete her NYSC national service without let or hindrance.”

But the NYSC has rejected the allegation. On Tuesday, its spokesperson Carol Embu questioned Sowore’s authority to comment on internal NYSC matters and clarified that Uguamaye remains an active corps member whose service has not been extended.

“I don’t understand how she will get an extension if she is still serving. NYSC is not an irresponsible organisation; we work with rules and regulations.” The NYSC urged the public to disregard rumours and allow the agency to carry out its responsibilities without undue political interference.

Uguamaye has not publicly confirmed any service extension.
