Police Urge Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to Cancel Planned Sallah Rally
Kogi State police have called on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan to cancel her planned Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial District, citing security concerns and a state government ban on political gatherings.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, through the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya, reminded organizers that the rally violates the Kogi State government’s proclamation, which banned all political rallies and processions on Monday.
The statement explained that the request to cancel the rally stems from intelligence reports indicating potential security threats, including the possibility that hoodlums might hijack the event and disrupt public order. The police emphasized that maintaining the peace in Kogi State is a top priority.
The police further warned that any individuals attempting to cause disturbances would face the full force of the law.
Despite the ban, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to go ahead with her rally, describing it as a “homecoming” to celebrate Eid al-Fitr with her constituents. She insisted that the event is a cultural and religious gathering, not a political one.
The stand-off between the police and the senator has raised tensions in the state, with Kogi residents now awaiting further updates on whether the rally will take place as planned or if authorities will enforce the ban.
