Police Arrests Suspected Rapist in Delta
Oyibo Awani, a former leader of Okere community has been arrested by the Police in Warri for allegedly raping a minor.
Warri Sentinel previously reported on the search for Awani, who was accused of assaulting an eleven-year-old girl on Thursday, August 1, 2024.
Mr Awani was arrested by the police from the ‘A’ divisional headquarters following his appearance in court on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
Before his arrest, he faced charges for an alleged attack on the Olu of Warri on March 2, 2024 and had been on the run.
A community leader who spoke to our correspondent anonymously confirmed the arrest.
“He has been evading legal authorities for over two months now. The law caught up with when he had to face a case related to Olu of Warri. He was arrested outside the High Court after trial.
He is currently cooling off in one of the cells. Okere community leadership will ensure he is charged to court and the victim gets due justice.
He further disclosed that the suspect tried to silence them through the bribe, but they stood their ground.
“He tried to bribe them, but they refused. We appreciate their courage during these hard times. We are going to ensure he faces the consequences of his action, ” he concluded.
The matter is currently being investigated by the Police.
