Olu of Warri Launches Free Cataract Surgery Programme
In a significant effort to improve eye health in rural communities, the Olu of Warri has launched the third edition of a free cataract surgery programme. The initiative, which took place from November 4 to November 8, 2024, aims to address the pressing issue of vision impairment among residents of Warri Kingdom.
The event, themed “That I May See Again, Light Has Come,” marks the third edition of the initiative. It seeks to address the widespread issue of cataract-related blindness and other eye conditions in the Niger Delta region.
Dr. Mejuya Okorodudu, Chief Ophthalmologist of the Africa Cataract and Eye Foundation, explained that the project was designed to reduce cases of preventable blindness in riverine communities. He highlighted the addition of a 40-foot mobile theatre to the programme, which further facilitates the delivery of eye care services in remote areas.
“This initiative is driven by my deep passion to help members of riverine communities who often have limited access to quality eye care,” Dr. Okorodu said. “This year’s edition has been well-received, with stronger support and an even higher turnout of patients compared to previous years.”
Beneficiaries of the programme expressed their gratitude to the Olu of Warri and the organisers for restoring their sight. They were also given post-operative health advice and encouraged to follow prescribed care instructions to ensure long-term eye health.
The Africa Cataract and Eye Foundation’s collaboration with the Olu of Warri began in July 2022, with the first series of free cataract surgeries taking place that year. The programme is set to continue offering vital eye care to underserved communities across the region.
