Oborevwori Declares Himself APC Leader, Calls Shift “A Movement, Not Defection”
Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has formally declared himself the leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, signalling a political shift. The announcement was made during a reception in Asaba on Monday, April 28, 2025, where the governor defended his decision to leave the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and join the ruling APC.
Oborevwori, who assumed office in May 2023, described his move as more than just a party defection, calling it a movement.
“It is a movement; it is not a defection. After extensive consultations, we unanimously agreed that Delta must join the APC. Our state cannot afford to remain in opposition after more than ten years.” He stated.
The governor stressed that the APC’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” aligns with his own “M.O.R.E. Agenda” for Delta State’s development, making the transition a natural and strategic decision. He hinted that his shift could lead to broader political realignments, suggesting other governors might follow suit.
“This movement is not just for Delta; I believe other governors will soon join as well,” he said.
Oborevwori also vowed to unify the APC in Delta. “Now that I have come, there will be no more factions. The Governor takes charge. I do not believe in factions. Everyone must queue for the development of Delta State,” he declared.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, who formally welcomed the governor to the APC.
Former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa. Okowa, reflecting on the state’s past, noted the missed opportunities during his tenure due to Delta’s opposition status. He supported the decision to join the APC, stating that it is essential for the state’s prosperity.
“Now, there’s a recognition that we must connect with federal structures to secure more benefits for Delta State,” Okowa added. He urged unity among both new and old APC members in the state, stressing the importance of collective support for both the President and the Governor to ensure political dominance.
However, Oborevwori’s declaration has not been without controversy. Tensions have been rising within the APC, with key figures such as Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and Festus Keyamo at odds over leadership in the state. Both have expressed differing views on who should lead the party in Delta, adding to the internal party friction.
Despite these challenges, Oborevwori’s bold declaration places him at the forefront of Delta’s APC, with many now watching to see how the party resolves its leadership disputes and how the governor can translate this political realignment into tangible progress for the state.
