NUT Declares Indefinite Strike in Oyo Over Abduction of Teachers, Pupils
The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has declared an indefinite strike for all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, over the continued abduction of teachers and pupils in the state.
The union said the action became necessary to demand urgent government intervention and the immediate rescue of the victims, whose whereabouts remain unknown.
In a statement signed by the NUT Oyo State Chairman, Hassan Fatai, and Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the union said the prolonged captivity of the abducted teachers and pupils has created fear among members and raised serious concerns about the safety of schools across the state.
It added that the incident has unsettled affected communities and discouraged many parents from sending their children to school.
According to the union, the strike is intended to draw the government’s attention to the urgent need for stronger security measures and the unconditional release of those abducted.
The NUT urged all affected teachers to comply fully with the directive, remain peaceful, and prioritize their safety during the period of the industrial action.
The union also expressed solidarity with the abducted victims and their families, pledging to continue engaging relevant authorities until they are safely released.
It reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and security of teachers and students, stressing that the protection of school communities remains non-negotiable.
