NLC Demands Reversal of Telecom Tariff Hike, Announces Nationwide Protests

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned the 50% telecom tariff hike, demanding an immediate reversal to avoid severe consequences. Despite prior agreements with the Federal Government and the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), telecom companies have proceeded with the increase.

The NLC has set a deadline of March 1 for a total shutdown of telecom operations unless the hike is reversed.

In the meantime, workers and citizens are urged to boycott services from MTN, Airtel, and Glo daily from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, starting February 13, 2025, and to suspend data purchases.

The NLC also warned against further burdensome tax reforms, urging policies that are fair to workers. The Congress vowed to advocate for worker-friendly tax policies.

In a statement signed by President Joe Ajaero and General Secretary Emma Ugboaja, the NLC accused telecom firms of breaching trust by implementing the tariff hike before completing the agreed review process. It also criticized the government for failing to protect citizens from corporate exploitation.

If the tariffs are not rolled back by February 29, the NLC will begin a nationwide telecom shutdown on March 1.
