NIMASA Records Oil Spill at Shell Loading Terminal in Rivers

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has confirmed an oil spill at the Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) loading terminal in Bonny, Rivers State.

In a statement issued on Sunday,December 15, NIMASA’s Head of Public Relations, Osagie Edward, explained that the incident occurred on December 14 following a rupture in the pipeline at the terminal.

Edward said that SPDC had responded swiftly by shutting down the affected pipeline and deploying containment booms to limit the spill’s spread to nearby communities.

According to him, the spill has reached the shoreline, NIMASA is actively monitoring the situation from its emergency operations centre. The agency is working closely with SPDC and other stakeholders to assess the damage and determine the necessary steps for remediation.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to mitigating the spill’s impact and restoring affected areas, while also advising the public to remain calm.
