Nigerian Railway Slashes Train Fares by 50% for Festive Season
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced a 50% fare reduction on all train services nationwide between December 23 and January 4. This step aims to ease the travel cost burden for Nigerians during the busy Christmas and New Year period.
According to NRC Managing Director Dr. Kayode Opeifa, transport fares by air and road have risen sharply amid heightened holiday demand, with air tickets reaching ₦500,000 and road fares to Abuja climbing above ₦100,000.
While free train rides were initially considered, previous experiences showed that they caused overcrowding and operational challenges. Instead, the NRC has chosen to heavily subsidize fares to maintain service efficiency while offering relief to passengers.
Preparations have also been made to improve passenger comfort ahead of the holiday rush, reinforcing rail travel as an affordable, safe, and dependable alternative this season.
